Should The San Francisco Giants Trade Madison Bumgarner To The Minnesota Twins or New York Yankees?

*I know that Bumgarner is left-handed and I put his head on a right-handed body.

The San Francisco Giants are going to be sellers at the trade deadline. We knew that before the season started. As the deadline approaches I get more and more excited for the Giants to go in a new direction. I am hoping they can move as many players as they can to kickstart their rebuild.

Twins

In order to get better prospects the Giants could include Madison Bumgarner and Will Smith in the same deal. Bumgarner is the best arm available at the deadline in my opinion. Throughout his career he has thrown just over 100 IP in the post-season. In the post-season he has an 8-3 record with a 2.11 ERA. As a pitcher in the World Series he is a perfect 4-0 with a 0.25 ERA. If you are going to make a run in 2019 – this is the guy to get. Will Smith is no slouch either. He has been a dominant closer for the Giants so far this season. He is a perfect 19/19 in save opportunities with a 2.12 ERA. Both players are free agents after this season – and are essentially rentals.

With all of that being said – the Giants should still get a haul for these players. They will be huge assets to any team making a playoff push. The Twins are having a hell of a year and have a decent rotation – but it could get better. Bumgarner would provide the experience that their staff is clearly missing. They also do not have a well established closer – a role in which Smith could fill.

I have identified Alex Kirilloff, Brent Rooker and Jorge Alcala as three prospects the Giants should ask for in return. It is no secret that the Giants have had a hard time finding outfielders. Kirilloff is one of the best prospects in baseball. He is just 21 years old and could be ready for the Major Leagues by next season. Kirilloff projects to be a plus hitter with above average power.

Rooker is a 24 year old AAA player. He projects to be an average hitter with plus power. The issue with Rooker is he has had a hard time finding a position and is a below-average fielder.

Alcala is a starting pitcher with plus-plus velocity and average everything else. His downfall is his control – which is just below average.

The Giants could flip two arms that they will lose after the season – for two bats that could be in their lineup as early as 2020, and an arm with some potential.

Yankees

The New York Yankees have not won a World Series since 2009! That was almost 10 years ago. The Yankees are in their longest World Series drought of my lifetime. They need to make some moves.

Madison Bumgarner being traded to the New York Yankees just makes too much sense. This absolutely seems like a deadline deal that the Yankees would have made in the past. Can you imagine Bumgarner pitching in a Yankees-Red Sox game, how electric would that be?

Clint Frazier is a player that the Yankees just don’t have room for. He deserves to get playing time somewhere else. If he came over to the Giants he would immediately be an everyday player – I think his personality would fit in great with the team as well.

Clarke Schmidt is a 23 year old starting pitcher – currently pitching for the Tampa Tarpons. He has above average stuff across the board – and was a 1st round pick in 2017.

Final Thoughts

I have no idea where Madison Bumgarner will end up. I am hopeful that the Giants will get creative and produce a respectful return for one of their all-time greats. All I know is that it is time for the Giants to move on and take this franchise in a different direction.
